We had the pleasure working with Natalia from Aurai last season and stayed in touch ever since. This girl is magical, her charm, intelligence, and love for slow fashion speaks volumes to us and if you haven’t heard from this Swimwear brand before, it sure is about time. Read more about her aspirations, her life mottos and empowering messages in our interview below. And you can check her website here.
What other women in your life inspire you?
My mom, without a doubt. She is an incredible person, a creative mind that has always been ahead of her time and taught us (my brother and I ) to work hard and make it happen.
What does a typical day in the life of Natalia look like?
I’m not a full time #girlboss just yet, so my days are divided between my job as a Junior Buyer at Ezibuy and my brand AURAI. I always try to check AURAI’s social media in the morning before leaving for the office to reply to customer queries, post on Instagram and plan the rest of my day. My days at the office are very busy so I really try to concentrate and be as effective as possible to avoid having to stay late.
Back home I exercise, have a shower, eat, and finally have my precious glass of wine while working on AURAI.
Do you have a life motto and if so what is it?
One of my life mottos comes from one of my favourite philosophers, Heraclitus of Ephesus. Heraclitus’ philosophy is that, a good starting point for anyone concerned with change in life. πάντα ῥεῖ ( which I have tattooed on my wrist ), meaning “everything flows”, is an aphorism used to characterize this notion of eternal change and mobility. Like a river, nature flows ever onwards. Even the nature of the flow changes. “We both step and do not step in the same rivers. We are and are not”. The peaks and troughs, pits and swirls, are all part of the ride.
Enjoy it, as wild as it may be. Reality is change and flow.
What is your favourite snack?
Nuts, I love all of them, especially pistachios, macadamias and almonds. I find them the perfect, healthy and convenient snack to have in my bag, inside my drawer at work, hidden in my car’s glove compartment, etc etc lol
What made you start Aurai? And where is the name come from? / meaning behind it?
I’ve had an entrepreneurial spirit since I was a child. After graduating in Design at University, I started to put a plan together to launch AURAI. It took me a few years, but very important ones in terms of education and knowledge to do so. Last year, AURAI was finally born of my passion for the summer, and also as a result of my studies in eco-design and the slow fashion movement. In greek mythology, the Aurai are the winged nymphs of the breezes that travelled all over the world through the sea carrying messages for the Gods. Like the greek mythological figures, we believe that through fashion we can also carry an important message.
What would you tell your younger self? Or younger girls as advise to live by?
Be patient. Many young entrepreneurs start too early, compromising life experiences that would be crucial for their business ideas later on. Get some work experience in your area, learn to work in a team, be an employee before being a employer. My second advice is: be the best in what you do, always challenge yourself. Have a sense of self-criticism to keep you sharp but balanced enough for you to always find fulfillment in what you do. Otherwise, what’s the point right?
What is something nobody knows about you?
One of my biggest and almost forgotten passion is parfumerie . I dreamed about studying it in France during my teens, but it was an impossible path for me to take. During my years living in Italy I finally had the amazing opportunity to go to Grasse, this region in the south of France considered the birthplace (and today, cradle) of the modern perfume industry, and study at Molinard, one of the oldest family companies in continuous existence. It was a short course but it was intense. Since then I’ve created a few exclusive scents for different brands and of course, a luscious one for AURAI, which we spray inside the boxes to make or customers feel they are already at the beach.
